Kevin Kalra

Kevin Kalra, a student at the University of Texas at Austin, is President of the Global Teaching Network (GTN), a Texas nonprofit dedicated to sustainable development education.  A committed teacher and social entrepreneur, Kevin has extensive leadership experience in sustainable development education.  Houston Mayor Bill White recognized his work by declaring March 30, 2004 as "Kevin Kalra Day."  

In April 2005, Kevin attended the 13th UN Commission on Sustainable Development at the UN Headquarters as a US youth representative.  While there, he organized the Asian Caucus and worked with the Education Caucus. 

The then 17-year-old was named Texas top high school volunteers for 2004 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism.  The same year he was honored as a “Toyota Community Scholar” (www.toyota.com/about/community/education/2004/scholars.html), through which experience he became aware of the issues he raises in this article. 

Kevin is completing his second year at the University of Texas at Austin and intends to major in Geography, Secondary Education, and Mathematics.
